From modest beginnings in 1987, with two children with cerebral palsy in a one-room set-up, one trained special educator, and a few parents and volunteers, Shishu Sarothi has come a long way over the last 3+ decades to be recognized as a leading regional-level institution on disability matters. Services have reached thousands of children and persons with disabilities from Assam and North East India and beyond. The organization now strides the twin tracks of rights and service delivery in alignment with national and international mandates on disability.
Shishu Sarothi has a permanent facility designed on the lines of a typical Assam-type school building. It was built in phases on government-allotted land in Guwahati from the mid-90s, with painstakingly raised funds from different sources. This space has been a second home for so many children and persons with disabilities.
However, the biggest challenge faced by Shishu Sarothi is the fact that it is located in a low-lying, monsoon and waterlogging-prone, seismically vulnerable terrain. Over the years, the building has begun to show signs of disrepair from waterlogging and seepage that is beginning to threaten some parts and impinge on the safety of the children.
There is an urgent need to repair seepage and leaks on the roof and ceilings and floor level cracks and gaps, fix window panes, improve drainage in the inner open courtyard and recreate a safe, stimulating play area for the children and staff on the premises.
We estimate that this will cost close to Rs. 8 lakhs.
Will you help to repair and restore this space and recreate a safe and lively play area for children with disabilities?
Support Shishu Sarothi in impacting numerous lives by contributing towards the restoration of this safe space. This will help children and people with disabilities get equal opportunities for education, and vocational training.
We will get a 25% matching grant for the donations you make this week!
